Princess Theatre

Princess Theatre

Showcasing theatre since 1854, The Princess Theatre is the oldest continuous entertainment site in Australia. A total refurbishment was done in 1986 when Marriner Theatre’s purchased the building. It reopened in 1989 with ‘Les Miserable’ which set a new record for the longest running show ever staged.

The 1488 seated theatre has had many sold out nights with world class stage productions to have performed. Cats, Mama Mia, The Producers, Dirty dancing, Jersey Boys and Hairspray are some of the international favourites that have performed at the Princess Theatre.

Federici

After the performance of the opera ‘Faust’ in 1888, Federici died of a heart attack and is said to still linger around the Princess Theatre. A seat is left open for him every opening night in the dress circle and sighting of Federici have been viewed as a sign of good luck. Many staff have reported seeing the friendly ghost.
