Old Melbourne Gaol

Discover Old Melbourne Gaol’s colourful history. Between 1945 until its closure in 1924, The Gaol held Melbourne’s most dangerous criminals and is renowned being the location where infamous bushranger Ned Kelly was executed. During its operation, the original cells also held petty offenders, debtors, children, the homeless and mentally ill.

Today Old Melbourne Gaol serves as a museum, consisting of a bluestone building spanning over three levels and a courtyard. Located next to the old City Police Watch House and City Courts buildings, visitors can visit the Gaol during the day or participate in night tours including A Night in the Watch House, Hangman’s Night Tour and Ghosts!
