Celebrate The Annual Indonesia Street Festival in Melbourne

Now in its fifth year, Melbourne’s Indonesia Street Festival will take place at Queen Victoria Market on the 3rd of April from 10am – 4pm. Enjoy a vast array of authentic Indonesian Cuisine, family activities, cultural performances and children’s workshops at this vibrant event.

The street festival celebrates Kartini Day, a significant holiday in Indonesia. Kartini Day celebrates the birth of Raden Ajeng Kartini – one of the country’s national heroes in the emancipation of Indonesian women. During her short life, Kartini fought for women’s education and women’s rights in Indonesia. She died at the age of 25 after the birth of her first child in 1904. Her letters were later published in 1911 under the title, Door Duisternis tot Licht (‘Through Darkness into Light’) and created support for the Kartini Foundation which opened the first girls’ school in Java in 1916.
