South Bank is one kilometre south of the central business district of Melbourne. Some of the historical sites are the buildings on the eastern side of the town, such as the National Gallery of Victoria, the Victorian Arts Centre, the Victoria Barracks, the Victorian College of the Arts and the Malthouse Theatre.

The main attraction of South Bank is the Southgate Arts and Leisure Precinct. It is a precinct for shopping, eating and entertainment on the southern banks of the Yarra River. a retail, eating, and entertainment precinct on the southern bank of the Yarra River. The entertainment precinct continues down the Yarra and also includes Crown Casino.

The South Bank promenade was designed by architects Denton Corker Marshall, and runs all the way from Princes Bridge to the Queen’s Bridge found on Queens Bridge Street. South Bank houses an arts and crafts market is found on the promenade in areas in and around the Arts Centre on Sundays. The promenade also features several buskers and quite a few popular pavement chalk artists.
