National Gallery of Victoria
Visit the National Gallery of Victoria & the Melbourne Arts Precinct of Southbank and learn more about Australian and international art.
The National Gallery of Victoria is Australia’s oldest gallery and was founded in 1861. The prestigious gallery celebrated its 150th year anniversary in 2011 and is based at two locations with the NVG International at the Melbourne Arts Precinct of Southbank and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia located at Federation Square.
Along with The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, the NVG International now boasts an exhibition space of almost 19,000 square metres. The NGV International displays a large collection of paintings from Europe, Asia, America and Oceania spanning thousands of centuries from ancient artefacts right up to contemporary art.
The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia pays homage to Indigenous and non-Indigenous art from the colonial period to the present day. Works include paintings, sculpture, fashion and textiles, decorative arts, photography, prints, drawings and jewellery. There is more Australian art on permanent display here than any other gallery in the world.
General admission is free for both the NVG International and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia. As well as housing permanent collections, the National Gallery of Victoria hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year where admission fees may apply. Please view the What’s On at the National Gallery of Victoria section for current exhibitions and admission prices.
