2017 Melbourne International Comedy Festival

Melbourne International Comedy Festival

MICF2017All

The 31st Melbourne International Comedy Festival returns for another year of laughs from the 29th of March – 23rd April 2017. Transforming into the comedy capital of the world each April, Melbourne sees the festival taking over the city with a huge program of stand-up comedy, cabaret, theatre, street performance, film, television, radio and visual arts. The Melbourne International Comedy Festival is Australia’s biggest ticketed cultural event and is one of the top three comedy festivals in the world – the other two including Montreal’s Just for Laughs and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Key highlights of the festival include the Gala Opening Night – with the Allstar Supershow being hosted by none other than Will Anderson – and the The Great Debate. In 2017, the Debate takes over Melbourne Town Hall for its 28th year and will welcome six local and international talent to the stage to wield their powers of persuasion to win the day.

ibis Styles Melbourne, The Victoria Hotel is one of the many venues which will host our local and international comedians throughout the Comedy Festival. In 2017, we will be welcoming the following funny people to our hotel:

Aaron Chen – The Infinite Faces of Chenny Baby
Multidisciplinary artist Aaron Chen brings you the freshest and most exquisite comedy you have ever witnessed. This long awaited and highly anticipated solo show will cover many of the most pressing issues today – and he might even reveal his crush.

Daniel Townes – Watch Your Mouth
Daniel returns with a new show about political correctness and how people get offended, and then people who offended them get annoyed that they’re offended, which is funny because they’re offended by someone taking offence. Watch Your Mouth is all about that and other chaos that comes with it.

Jared Jekyll – Young, Dumb and Full of Pun
Young, Dumb and Full of Pun combines Jekyll’s love of hip-hop music, punk rock energy and good old fashioned stand up with a few classic Dad jokes thrown into the mix. Jared is currently working on a weekly internet series called ‘Dad, Dadder, Daddest’, which can be seen on his official Facebook page. Don’t miss this Sydney favourite when he brings his original, inhibition-free comedy show to ibis Styles Melbourne, The Victoria Hotel!

Sam Taunton – Taunts Down for What?
2016 was a big year for Sam Taunton – he became a MTV presenter for Australia & New Zealand and he also toured across Australia and New Zealand  as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow. Cited as one of the most exciting new voices in Australian comedy, Taunton is also a RAW Comedy National Finalist and has been handpicked for The Comedy Zone. Don’t miss the man who has been seen and heard on ABC2’s Comedy Up Late, SBS2, triple j and JoyFM!

New Order
Ahir Shah, Brenna Reece, Emma Sidi and Steve Bugeja are four of the UK’s hottest comedy trailblazers that make up New Order. Don’t miss the four light up the comedy scene with their fresh, original and trendsetting comedy!

Alice Snedden & Donna Brookbanks – Please Stop Clapping
Teaming up to perform at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Donna and Alice are fresh off a run of successful shows in New Zealand. With the quick witted, dry and observational delivery of stories about Alice’s upbringing, and the energetic, kooky stand-up and character comedy of Donna, Please Stop Clapping has something for everyone.

Anne Edmonds – No Offence, None Taken
Anne ‘Eddo’ Edmonds is widely recognised as one of Australia’s most exciting stand up and character comedians. In 2015, she walked away with the coveted, peer-nominated Comic’s Choice Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and in 2016 Anne was nominated for a Barry Award for the best show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Do we need to say more? Anne is a must-see during the 2017 Comedy Festival.

Becky Lucas – Little Bitch
If you follow Becky on Twitter or subscribe to her popular newsletter, you will know she is one of Australia’s rising stars in comedy for a reason. She has written for the Emmy-nominated show Please Like Me and is co-writing Matt Okine’s upcoming show on Stan. She has also been busy performing on the ABC and Comedy Channel. Becky is back for her third Comedy Festival and is one not to miss.

Sammy J – Hero Complex
Sammy J is an award winning comedian, musician and writer. He has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe and Montreal’s Just for Laughs festivals and has been nominated for three ARIA awards. He was also the winner of the Best Comedy at the 2016 Melbourne Fringe. Don’t miss the star of ABC’s Playground Politics live at the 2017 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

SNORT – With Friends
New Zealand’s best young comedians from TV, theatre and stand up comedy will be joining forces for SNORT, an improv show that plays by its own rules. SNORT takes one word from the audience and builds and hour of great, high-stakes comedy entirely made up on the spot. SNORT has been completely selling out back in Auckland for over three years – with no signs of slowing down. Don’t miss a rotation of great talent during this year’s show.

The Stevenson Experience – Identical as Anything
The Stevenson Experience has been nominated for the Best Comedy Fringe gong in both 2015 and 2016 – with their ongoing popularity meaning that without a doubt they will be at least nominated again in 2017. Performing to sold-out shows at the 2016 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Canberra Comedy Festival, Sydney Comedy Festival and Perth Fringe Festival, this duo will put on a performance not to be missed.

Tom Walker – Bee Boo
Performer, writer, improviser and clown – Tom Walker has been cited as the most exciting new face on the comedy circuit having picked up two major awards at the 2016 Melbourne International Comedy Festival – Best Newcomer and the Directors’ Choice Award. Tom has wowed audiences locally and abroad – with performances at both the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and London’s Soho Theatre. Tom has also starred as a core cast member on Whose Line Is It Anyway? Australia on the Comedy Channel in 2016. Don’t miss the master clown in action at this year’s Comedy Festival!
